May So, RDH
May So has been bringing smiles to patients' faces as a Registered Dental Hygienist for over a decade. Known for her gentle, calming approach and particular expertise in orthodontic hygiene, May makes every patient — from nervous first-timers to those with complex dental histories — feel genuinely comfortable and cared for.
She works closely with Dr. Waji Khan at Aurora Borealis Dentistry in Aurora, Ontario, where her thorough, personalized approach to hygiene care sets the foundation for patients' long-term oral health.
Background & Experience
Dentistry has always been a part of May's life. Growing up in a family of dental hygienists, she developed an understanding of and appreciation for oral health care long before she entered the profession herself. This foundation gives her a rare depth of perspective — she has seen dentistry through many lenses, from the patient's chair to every corner of a busy dental office.
Over the course of her career, May has taken on many roles within dental practices — assisting, reception, and clinical hygiene — which has given her a thorough understanding of every step of the patient experience. This breadth of experience means she approaches her hygiene appointments not just as a clinical task, but as part of a patient's full journey through the dental office.
May graduated with honours in Dental Hygiene in 2016 and has since built a clinical practice spanning over a decade. She is a member in good standing of the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO) and is committed to ongoing professional development to stay current with evolving techniques and technologies.
A note from May: "My goal is to make every visit feel comfortable and empowering — not something to dread. Whether you're coming in for a routine cleaning or haven't been to the dentist in a few years, you'll always be met without judgment, and we'll work through it together."
Expertise in Orthodontic Hygiene
One of May's particular areas of clinical depth is orthodontic hygiene — supporting patients who are undergoing treatment with traditional braces or clear aligners. Orthodontic patients have specific hygiene needs that differ significantly from routine care — brackets and wires create areas where plaque accumulates and is difficult to remove, while aligner trays can trap bacteria against tooth surfaces if not cleaned properly.
Having worked closely with both systems throughout her career, May provides targeted guidance on cleaning techniques, tools, and routines that protect teeth and gums during orthodontic treatment — helping patients arrive at the end of their orthodontic journey with both a straight smile and healthy gums to match.
What to Expect at Your Appointment with May
A hygiene visit with May is thorough, calm, and always tailored to you. Here's what she focuses on at every appointment:
A full review of your gum health, pocket depths, and any changes since your last visit — not just a surface clean.
Careful removal of tartar and plaque above and below the gumline, using gentle technique to minimise sensitivity.
Practical, honest guidance on brushing, flossing, and the tools that will actually make a difference for your specific mouth.
May moves at your pace — especially with children and anxious patients. No rushing, no judgment, ever.
Patients who prefer to see May consistently can request her by name — building a familiar, trusted relationship over time.
May flags concerns early — from gum inflammation to areas of early decay — so they can be addressed before they require more complex treatment.
